Commentary

Moving on - Right then, that wraps up this one-sided affair, as Ireland knock Oman out of this World Cup. Now we turn our attention to a mouth-watering European clash between England and Scotland at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. That game will get underway shortly, so switch tabs and join us for all the build-up and live coverage. Cheers!

The victorious skipper of Ireland - Lorcan Tucker says it was great to turn around from the last match. Acknowledges that Oman are a good side, they are competitive and bowled really well in the first 10 overs. Talking about the points table, Lorcan says they want a couple of results to go their way.

The captain of Oman - Jatinder Singh says that since it was a new track, they wanted to bowl first. Adds that they wanted to assess the conditions as in the last game, they were put into bat after losing the toss. Mentions that they were in the game, picking up four quick wickets, but praises Lorcan Tucker for his knock and the way he built the partnership with Gareth Delany, calling it a masterclass. Tells that they just could not execute their plans with the ball under pressure. Singh credits his spinners, but also admits that after the early wickets, they let that partnership build, which cost them. Says that they were in the chase till the 10th over, but losing too many wickets for 25-odd runs did not help their cause. Further adds that as a side, they do lack experience and exposure but playing against top sides, will only help them improve and every game is an oppurtunity do that.

Let's hear from the captains now...

Ireland clamp down when It matters - Ireland were solid with the ball overall. Matthew Humphreys set the tone with an early wicket, although they did leak runs during the Powerplay. But once Barry McCarthy removed Kaleem, Ireland tightened the screws and never allowed Oman any breathing space. Humphreys went on to add another to his tally, while Josh Little was the standout with a three-wicket haul, and McCarthy helped finish the job. There were a couple of run-outs, but they also put down a few chances in the field, which remains a worrying area for them in this World Cup and one that needs improvement.

An Irish run-fest unleashed - Earlier in the game, Ireland racked up the highest total of this World Cup, powered by a stunning unbeaten 94 from skipper Lorcan Tucker. He put on a crucial 101-run stand with Gareth Delany, who chipped in with a fluent half-century, and the pair rescued Ireland after an early collapse. George Dockrell then provided the late fireworks with a blistering 35 off just nine balls, lifting the total well past the 200-run mark. For the bowling side, Shakeel Ahmed was the standout performer with a three-wicket haul, all three strikes coming in the Powerplay, while Kaleem and Shah picked up one apiece. However, the pacers struggled badly, conceding a combined 138 runs in eight overs, which left them with far too much ground to make up.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Ireland skipper, Lorcan Tucker, wins the award for his excellent knock of 94* off 51. Former Pakistan international, Waqar Younis, hands over the award to him. He says they had a mixed Powerplay but as the pitch was good, they had to capitalise on it. Tucker reckons that he just tried to keep the tempo up and not rush anything. Mentions that the other batters played handy knocks to get the score over 200.

From flying to falling apart - Despite losing their skipper early, Oman flew out of the blocks thanks to some fluent strokeplay from Aamir Kaleem, racing to 63 in the Powerplay. The 73-run stand between Kaleem and Hammad Mirza kept them in the hunt, but once Kaleem got out after bringing up his fifty, becoming the oldest player to score a T20 World Cup half-century, the innings completely unraveled. Mirza fell just short of his own milestone not long after, and from 97/2 Oman slumped to 139 all out, with just one batter other than the two mentioned getting to double digits, a sorry collapse after such a promising start.

Irish surge keeps the dream alive - Ireland have kept their World Cup campaign alive with a dominant all-round display here, excelling with both bat and ball. In the process, they have handed Oman their third defeat of the tournament, making them the first side to be eliminated, which will be hugely disappointing for them.

Commentary

Welcome back for the chase. The Irish players are out in the middle. Jatinder Singh and Aamir Kaleem to open for Oman. Matthew Humphreys to bowl first.

...THE CHASE...

A mountain to climb - Oman’s bowling unit have reached a worrying low point in the 2026 T20 World Cup, having now conceded back-to-back totals of over 200 runs. They were beaten comprehensively by Sri Lanka. Will we see a better performance from the Oman batting group, or is another big loss on the cards? Chase is coming up next.

Advantage, Ireland!  It began as a dream start for Oman, as Shakeel Ahmed bowled with clinical precision to claim three crucial wickets within the Powerplay, leaving the Irish top order in tatters. Oman strategically utilized their spinners for nine of the first ten overs, successfully drying up the runs and keeping Ireland under immense pressure.  However, the momentum shifted dramatically when Lorcan Tucker decided to take the attack to the opposition. As Tucker’s aggression mounted, Oman’s disciplined start crumbled, the bowlers struggled to maintain their lengths under the onslaught, conceding far too many boundary deliveries that allowed Ireland to wrestle back control and post a commanding total.

Irish skipper steps up - In a must-win encounter to keep their top-two aspirations alive, Ireland’s captain, Lorcan Tucker rose to the occasion with a career-defining performance. After surviving a close stumping scare while in his late 20s, Tucker seized the lifeline with clinical aggression, scoring an unbeaten 94 off just 51 deliveries.  His knock provided the backbone for the Irish total, while a late-game cameo from George Dockrell added the necessary fireworks to push the score beyond the 200-run mark, giving Ireland a comfortable cushion and all the momentum heading into the second innings.

19.56

SIX! Back-to-back sixes! Sufyan Mehmood misses the yorker and bowls another slot delivery, on leg. George Dockrell gets right under the ball and pumps it over the long on fence for another biggie. Tucker will be left stranded on 94 at the other end, but he won't mind one bit here.

19.46

SIX! Clean strike! Sufyan Mehmood tries the slower one, but serves this right in the slot, on middle and leg. George Dockrell gets his front leg out of the way and slogs it over the deep mid-wicket fence for a biggie.

17.16

OUT! TAKEN! Oman finally have another wicket, and Shah Faisal breaks the massive 101-run stand. He pitches it up and just outside off. Gareth Delany looks to go big down the ground but just fails to get under it and his bat turns in his hands as well. He does not get the elevation as the ball flies towards long off, where Ashish Odedara comes forward, fumbles but manages to grab it on the second attempt near his chest. Delany departs for an excellent knock of 56 off 30, and Ireland lose half their side now.

16.44

FOUR! Lovely shot! Shah Faisal goes fuller and outside off, pace on this time. Gareth Delany reaches out for it a bit, opens the face of his bat and slices it wide of deep point for a one-bounce four. That brings up the 100-RUN STAND between the Irish pair.

16.36

SIX! FIFTY FOR DELANY! A 28-ball half-century and he gets to it with a bang as well. Shah Faisal pulls his length back a bit, on off, takes pace off as well. Gareth Delany reads it early, waits for it and launches it over the long on fence for a biggie. This has been a fantastic knock from him, and he will look to finish with a flurry here.

DRINKS! Oman are falling like a pack of cards. They have lost four wickets in four overs. Ireland have started to hold onto their chance. The pressure is on Oman and it looks uncertain that they'll reach the summit but Oman would like to give a tough fight right till the end. Also, Nadeem Khan is the next batter in. Oman need 123 runs in just 38 deliveries.

However, it is too late by then, as Curtis Campher throws it to the bowler's end, where Harry Tector is backing up and breaks the stumps, with Mirza nowhere to be seen. Hammad is absolutely furious with Jiten Ramanandi but has to walk back just short of his fifty.

This partnership between Aamir Kaleem and Hammad Mirza is looking strong, but they need to continue like this and cannot slow down in any phase.

DRINKS! Ireland have recovered well from early trouble, and skipper Lorcan Tucker is leading from the front. He became just the second Irish captain to score a half-century in a T20 World Cup, and now will look to stay till the end to get them to a good total. He has been well supported by Gareth Delany, who has played his part. Oman will feel that they have missed a trick here. Despite the wickets, they have dished out too many boundary balls, and that has hurt them. They have to execute their plans better in the remaining overs and restrict their opponents to as low as possible. Also, Jiten Ramanandi is to bowl after the break.

All in readiness now! We can see the Oman players spread out and take up their respective field positions. Tim Tector and Ross Adair are the two openers for Ireland. Spin early on as Shakeel Ahmed has the new ball in hand. Let's play...

It is time for the unfurling of the flags of both countries, and we can see the players walking out to the middle and lining up for their respective national anthems. It will be Oman's first followed by that of Ireland.

PITCH REPORT - Natalie Germanos is pitchside. She says that the square boundaries are 69 and 67 meters, while the straight hit is 79 meters. Bazid Khan joins her and says that SSC is a surface that deals with a lot of bounce. He also spots some grass cover on the wicket. Bazid reckons that the short balls and bouncers will come into play, and the fast bowlers will want to bang it as hard as possible. Ends by saying that it is not that dry and he still expects runs here.

The skipper of Ireland - Lorcan Tucker says the pitch looks good and are happy to bat first. Expresses that despite losing two games, they have to think positively. Mathematically, there’s still a chance and that's how the group is approaching it.  Admits that losing Paul Stirling is a big blow but they have to adapt quickly, move forward, and continue competing as a unit. Informs that they have made two changes - Tim Tector and Josh Little are back in the side.

Oman's captain - Jatinder Singh says that since it is a new wicket, they want to bowl first. Adds that they are just trying to focus on small things. Mentions that they haven't batted well in the first two games and hopes to do better.  Says that losing four wickets in the Powerplay, your team's head is gone and it is difficult to recover and also they didn't expect that much bounce here in SSC. Informs that they have made a couple of changes.

Ireland (Playing XI) - Tim Tector (In for Paul Stirling), Harry Tector, Ross Adair, Lorcan Tucker (C/WK), Curtis Campher, George Dockrell, Gareth Delany, Mark Adair, Matthew Humphreys, Barry McCarthy, Josh Little (In for Ben Calitz).

Oman (Playing XI) - Jatinder Singh (C), Aamir Kaleem, Hammad Mirza, Ashish Odedara (In for Wasim Ali), Mohammad Nadeem, Vinayak Shukla (WK), Jiten Ramanandi, Nadeem Khan, Sufyan Mehmood, Shah Faisal, Shakeel Ahmed (In for Jay Odedra).

TOSS - Up goes the coin, and it lands in favour of Jatinder Singh. Oman elect to BOWL first!

A late resurgence? Despite the recent turbulence in both camps, the historical edge remains with Ireland. Having won four of their last six T20I encounters, the Irish haven't tasted defeat against Oman since 2019. However, in a World Cup where desperation often breeds brilliance, Oman knows that one solid performance from their senior core could give them some chances. It’s a clash of two sides fighting to keep their tournament hopes alive, one side battling a crisis of form, and the other a crisis of personnel. Stay tuned for toss and other updates.

Ireland in trouble losing Stirling - Ireland, meanwhile, enters this fixture searching for stability of a different kind. While their recent losses haven't been as statistically heavy as Oman's, the departure of skipper Paul Stirling due to a tournament-ending knee injury has left a massive void at the top of the order.  With Lorcan Tucker stepping up to lead and uncapped Sam Topping joining the ranks, the Irish are in the midst of a sudden transition. They’ll be looking to tighten up their fielding after a lapse-heavy performance against Australia and lean on the vast experience of George Dockrell to guide them back to winning ways.

Match number 22 - Welcome to Colombo for this beautiful Saturday morning showdown. As Group B of the T20 World Cup 2026 intensifies, Oman and Ireland find themselves in a high-pressure battle for redemption. While history reminds us of Oman’s famous upset over the Irishmen back in 2016, the current momentum tells a much tougher story for the Gulf nation. Coming off bruising defeats to Zimbabwe and a clinical Sri Lankan side, where they conceded a massive 225 runs. Oman’s confidence has taken a hit. All eyes are now on veterans Jatinder Singh and Aamir Kaleem to rediscover that 2016 magic and stabilize a batting order that has struggled to find its rhythm.

...MATCH DAY...

Match intro - The caravan moves to the historic Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo for a critical Group B clash that neither side can afford to lose. Ireland faces Oman in what is effectively an elimination game for both teams. After stumbling in their opening fixtures against the group's heavyweights, both sides are sitting on zero points. With the Super Eight qualification race heating up, this contest is purely about survival and restoring pride. Irish Intent - Ireland has had a rough start to their Asian campaign. After a stinging 20-run loss to Sri Lanka in their opener and a tough outing against Australia, their batting unit is under immense scrutiny. Captain Paul Stirling has struggled to get going, leaving too much work for the middle order of Harry Tector and Curtis Campher. Now, with Stirling set to miss the remainder of the tournament due to ligament damage to his knee, it is only going to compound their issues. However, their bowling has shown glimpses of quality. Against an Oman side that will be low on confidence, Ireland will look to be ruthless and secure a dominant win to boost their Net Run Rate and stay relevant. Oman’s quick turnaround - Oman is currently staring down the barrel. They have endured a nightmare schedule, suffering a massive 105-run thrashing at the hands of Sri Lanka just a few days ago in Pallekele, following an 8-wicket defeat to Zimbabwe. The quick travel from Kandy to Colombo leaves them with little time to lick their wounds. The biggest concern for captain Jatinder Singh is a batting lineup that has failed to cross the 120-run mark in two consecutive games. To challenge a Full Member nation like Ireland, Oman will require a team effort where both departments need to be in sync. Pitch and conditions - The SSC ground in Colombo is generally a good batting surface, but it offers plenty of assistance to spinners as the game progresses. Since this is a morning game, the pitch might hold a bit of moisture early on for the seamers, but the humidity will quickly sap the players' energy. Batting first is often the safer option here to avoid the pressure of chasing on a slowing track in the afternoon heat. Form (Last 5 completed T20Is, most recent first) - Ireland - LLWWL | Oman - LLWWL. Looking ahead - Ireland enters this contest as the clear favourite, largely due to their superior experience and they will be slightly fresher than their opponents. Oman’s morale would have taken a severe beating after the Sri Lanka game, and yet another test awaits them. Unless Oman’s spinners can spin a web around the Irish middle order, expect Ireland to register their first points of the 2026 World Cup comfortably.  On the day, anything goes - It is not all doom and gloom for Oman. There is plenty for them to reflect on, take pride in and draw confidence from. Overall, Ireland lead the head-to-head 4-2 in T20Is, but at the T20 World Cup, it is 1-0 to Oman, thanks to that famous two-wicket win in 2016 that stunned the then 'Kings of the Associates'. There is no reason it cannot happen again. In this format, the better side on the day takes the cake. Do not believe it? Just ask Zimbabwe.
