SIX! Sent into the crowd, and that brings up a FIFTY for Jos Buttler on his home ground. Malinga digs it in short, on middle. The ball gets a bit big on Buttler, but he stands tall and unleashes the pull over deep mid-wicket for a biggie. Jos had an underwhelming T20 World Cup earlier in the year, but ever since the IPL, he has found his mojo back and carried that form through.

FOUR! Cleverly played. Malinga gets it very full, outside off. Buttler hangs low and reaches out with his hands. He opens the bat face of the blade and glides it past backward point. The ball skips across the turf and the deep third fielder stands no chance.

OUT! HARRY BROOK IS RUN OUT! Good piece of work by Wanindu Hasaranga. Flatter trajectory yet again from Hasaranga, pitching it much fuller, on off and middle. Harry Brook jams it toward the leg side with soft hands to get a quick single, but Hasaranga seems ready as he swiftly charges on it, picks it up, and has a shy at the bowler's end on the turn. It hits the stumps directly, and Harry Brook is found short of the crease.

Flat and much fuller, on off, Harry Brook jams it to cover. There's a slight mix-up between the batters for the single, but they ended up not taking the risk.

Misfield! This is full and fired in, on middle. Brook stays rooted to the crease and knocks it to mid on before hurrying to the other end. Dasun Shanaka charges forward and tries to pick the ball up with his right hand but lets it through. The ball deflects off his right boot and goes behind, allowing the batters to take the second run. A clean pick-up and a possible direct hit could have found Brook wanting.

OUT! STUMPED! The change to bring on Tharindu Ratnayake has worked out well for the visitors. He offers a bit more flight to the delivery and drifts in, down the leg side, pitching it on a good length. Aneurin Donald predetermines and skips down the track to slog it over mid-wicket, but it gets into the gap between bat and pad, and the keeper, Kamil Mishara, does the rest of the job. The ball nearly popped out of the mitts, but Mishara managed to hold onto it before breaking the stumps. England are 22/1, chasing 125.

FOUR! Nicely played! Ratnayake bowls it fractionally short, just outside off. Aneurin Donald opens the face of the bat before cutting it through point for four more runs.

Just beats the off stump! Good-length delivery, with pace, just outside off. Nuwan Thushara makes room and tries to defend. The ball just glides past the off stump after beating the outside edge of the bat.

OUT! HIT WICKET! A bizarre dismissal. When it rains, it pours, quips Kumar Sangakkara, and that really sums up the Lankan innings. Pace taken off by Archer, on a good length. Hasaranga has a swipe across the line but he fails to pick the change of pace and is through his shot early, which results in him failing to make any connection. The follow-through of his bat goes ever so close to the stumps, and it ends up clipping the top of the woodwork when Wanindu sinks to a knee.

On a length, around off and middle. Wanindu Hasaranga heaves it from the inner part of his bat to deep square leg. He turns down the single.

FOUR! Oh, what a shot that is! Archer pitches it much fuller, on middle. Wanindu Hasaranga clears his front foot to drill it away toward the left of the mid on fielder and gets a crucial boundary.

The new batter is Dilshan Madushanka. It will be Wanindu Hasaranga on strike, though.

OUT! ESHAN MALINGA IS RUN OUT! Another one bites the dust. Angled in on a good length, on off. Malinga stays back and stabs it beside the strip on the off side before scampering through for a quick single. Archer can't get to the ball but Liam Dawson swoops in from a catching cover and picks the ball up cleanly. He opens up his body to be able to have a shy at the bowling end. He scores the direct hit with an underarm throw, with Eshan being well short.

At 135 kph, on a length, Hasaranga swings for the hills. The ball flies down to deep third off a thick outside edge. Adil Rashid sprints to his left and so nearly gets beaten by the spin. He overruns the ball but manages to stick out the right hand and make the stop. Just a single.

OUT! DRAGGED ON! Jamie Overton has his first wicket. It is the off-cutter by Overton, angled across off from over the wicket, on a length. Ratnayake hangs deep in the crease and clears his front leg. He has a big heave across the line with his body weight on the back foot. The ball catches an inside edge and deflects back onto the stumps. Sri Lanka are now 7 down for 119.

Full and angled in at the pads. It was there for Hasaranga to cash in with fine leg up inside the circle. He opts to just nudge it towards square leg and pick up a single.

On a back of a length, on off. Ratnayake takes a step towards the leg side initially but manages to reach out. Slaps it to deep point and gets to the other end.

Pace on now at 136 kph, closer to the off stump. Ratnayake throws his hands at the ball but is beaten for pace.

Angled away, on a back of a length. Tharindu flashes at the ball but is undone by the off-cutter.

Pace off and on a shortish length, on middle. Ratnayake has a swipe at the ball. Ekes out an inside edge behind square leg for a run.

Dishes out the bumper, angled in on middle. Ratnayake sways away from the line of the ball but does not drop his wrists. No harm done, though.

Hits the top of off, does Archer. Hasaranga hangs back and taps it to the left of point. A bit of hesitation but they eventually go through for a single.

Takes pace off and it is on a short of a good length. Ratnayake hops away from the stumps as he moves towards the leg side. Adjusts to the length and the slowness of the ball by steering it down to deep third for one.

Attempts the yorker in line with the off pole. Ratnayake gets his bat down in time and keeps it out.

OUT! TAKEN! Jofra Archer strikes gold on his return to the attack. Archer steams in from around the wicket and digs it in short, on off. Mendis gets his hands high as he tries to take the short ball on. He does not quite go through with the shot completely and picks out the man at deep mid-wicket. With Mendis hitting into the wind, Will Jacks is a good 20-30 yards in off the ropes and he makes no mistake in completing the catch.

Jofra Archer comes back into the attack. Archer went for 15 runs in his only over so far.

The length is pulled back, on off. Kamindu spanks it to deep cover for a single. A good comeback by Overton after being hit for a six.

SIX! All the way! Overton bangs it in short, it is the off-cutter. Mendis stands tall and climbs all over it as he nails the pull with a flat hit towards the deep square leg fence.

OUT! EDGED AND GONE! Not the best of balls but Liam Dawson will take it. A bit of a drag down, near the tramline. Shanaka does not move his feet much and goes hard on the cut with his hands. The ball stays low to graze the underedge and Jos Buttler does really well to stay low and pouch it safely. Shanaka stands there in disbelief. Sri Lanka are now 107/5.

SIX! Put away with disdain! Dawson goes searching for the yorker but ends up serving a full toss, on middle. Shanaka takes full toll as he holds his shape and clobbers it over deep mid-wicket for half a dozen.

OUT! CHARITH ASALANKA IS RUN OUT! There was no real excitement from England at first, with many believing Jacks had missed the chance. But as it turns out, he did enough, and that is a crushing blow for Sri Lanka. Speared in by flat and short, on middle. Mendis plays the late dab and as soon as the shot is played, Asalanka sets off for the run. He is almost halfway through before being sent back. He turns around and is late in doing so. Adil Rashid at short third is quick to get rid of the ball and throws it on the bounce towards the bowling end. Jacks gets beside the sticks to inflict the run out. The third umpire is called into action and although Jacks got the slightest of touches, the replays confirm that when the stumps light up, Asalanka was short of his ground despite the dive.

Wayward from Jacks. Drifts down leg, on a length. Charith tickles it fine. It goes towards the deep fine leg fence, where it is hauled in just before the boundary cushions. The batters hustle back for the third run as the throw comes in. Jos Buttler gathers the throw and flicks it behind onto the stumps, but Mendis is in by then. 9 runs already off the over.

SIX! That has gone back many a mile. Floated up at 78 kph, on middle. Asalanka charges down the track, and even though he is not entirely to the pitch of the ball, he reaches out to club it against the spin over deep mid-wicket for a biggie.

DRINKS BREAK! The game is on an even footing at the halfway stage. Sri Lanka have managed to get a partnership going, but they need this pair to go on for a while longer and provide a launchpad for the likes of Dasun Shanaka and Wanindu Hasaranga. England, meanwhile, have done well to break partnerships at regular intervals, and their fielding has also been sharp so far. This has not been the kind of wicket where you can simply swing through the line, and the slower balls have proved particularly effective. For a side that prides itself on adapting to the conditions, you can expect more of those variations from the home side as the innings progresses.

Pathum Nissanka opens his stance and decides to pull at it, but ends up hitting it flat toward the right of Harry Brook in the mid-wicket region. He locks his eyes on the ball, dives to his right and takes a sharp catch. Brook, on seeing Nissanka press back and set up for the pull, anticipated the shot and took a couple of steps to his right. That meant the ball came within his reach, and he did not have to stretch too far to complete the catch. Top stuff from the skipper of England.

FOUR! Beautifully done by Nissanka! Tossed up, fuller, around off, Pathum Nissanka plants his front foot toward the pitch of the ball and uses his bottom hand to hit it over cover for a boundary. Sri Lanka go past 50.
