Commentary
We are all set for Scotland's reply. Michael Jones has walked out in the middle with George Munsey to open for Scotland. Matthew Forde is set to bowl the first over of this chase.
... The Run Chase ...
Up for a quick chat - Shimron Hetmyer says the outing was a mix of good and bad. The good was being out in the middle and contributing, while the bad was just how hot it was out there. He jokes that it seemed like he was the only one really feeling the heat, adding that he even asked the umpires, who told him they did not feel it as much. He says the key for him is batting with a clear mind and being ready to cash in whenever the ball is there to be hit. He adds that everyone knows that the West Indies are a strong boundary-hitting side, but where they can fall short at times is in managing singles and dot balls, and that is something they are keen to improve by limiting the number of dots.
Hetmyer's swashbuckling knock - Hetmyer was at his brutal best, racing to a 22-ball fifty and setting a new record as the fastest West Indian to reach the mark in a T20 World Cup. Powell eventually fell when Currie snapped the partnership, but by then the rescue job was done and the stage was set perfectly for a big finish. Sherfane Rutherford came out swinging and through his cameo of 26 runs, he ensured that the scoring never dipped. Scotland couldn't string wickets regularly in that middle phase and their bowlers were taken apart. Brad Currie was the only one with an economy of under 6. It would require a strong start for Scotland to scale down this target against a West Indian bowling attack that has quality aplenty. Should be an interesting chase ahead. Stay tuned.
A solid resurrection in the middle overs - Shimron Hetmyer may have touched down in India late, but he made sure no one missed his arrival. Walking in with West Indies wobbling, he joined forces with Rovman Powell and completely changed the tone of the innings. Their counterpunching stand of 81 dragged the Men in Maroon out of trouble and turned the middle overs into a scoring spree, with 105 runs hammered between overs 7 and 15.
A cagey start, no freebies early - Scotland showed a lot of discipline with the new ball and didn't allow any sort of freedom for the West Indian openers to tee off from the outset. Hope and King played a few ambitious strokes, but were rather watchful in the Powerplay. Scots didn't get any wickets during the field restrictions as West Indies crawled to 33/0 in the first six. In an attempt to accelerate, both the openers were dismissed in quick time, which pushed West Indies for another rebuild with 66/2 on the board at halfway.
A strong finish in the end - West Indies were barely ticking at a run a ball through the first half, but the backend told a very different story as they blasted 116 runs in the last ten overs. Scotland did claw back a bit of control at the death, conceding just 15 runs across the last two, but the damage had already been done. From a sluggish start to a commanding finish, West Indies still ended up with a hefty total on the board and would be the happier of the two sides walking back in the dugout.

A dot to end the innings! Superb final over from Brad Currie. Brad goes into the surface, outside off. Romario Shepherd does not pick the slower one and swings way too early. The ball sneaks under his blade and Matthew Cross manages to get his body behind the ball. Just 7 runs off the last over. 15 off the last 2. West Indies finish with 182 on the board!
SIX! One hand comes off the handle, but it does not matter. Romario Shepherd's power takes it over the ropes. Cross-seam delivery, Currie goes searching for the yorker. It comes out as a low full toss, on off. Romario swings through the line. The ball catches the toe end of the blade but it clears the straight boundary. The long on and long off fielders got around but only watched it sailed over the fence.
Nicely bowled! Currie keeps it away from the batter's hitting arc, on a good length, flirting with the tramline. Romario Shepherd clears the front leg and gives it a heave but the ball goes over his blade. Matthew Cross, standing up to the stumps, manages to make the stop.
Low full toss, on middle, Matthew swings hard again but only gets the height. It is mistimed and the ball drops in the vacant mid on region. They cross.
A big swing and a miss! Sticks to the off-pace delivery, does Currie, on a good length, angling away. Matthew Forde swings for the hills but is early into the shot and fails to connect. 2 wickets and just 8 runs in the last 8 balls.
Another one bites the dust. Matthew Forde is the new batter in. Five balls to go...
OUT! CAUGHT! Back-to-back wickets for Scotland. Currie does not offer any pace, on a back of a length, outside off, Rutherford stays on the back foot and has a big swing at it. Neither does he get the elevation, nor is it wide enough of the fielder in the deep. Hits it flat and straight down the throat of deep cover, where Michael Jones makes no mistake. A handy 26 off 13 for Rutherford. West Indies are now 175/5.
Final over coming up. Brad Currie (3-0-16-1) to wrap up. Romario Shepherd walks in at number 6.

OUT! TAKEN! Brilliant grab by Brandon McMullen. Sharif goes searching for the yorker but ends up serving a high full toss, outside off. Hetmyer shuffles across to get closer to the line of the ball. He smears it aerially towards wide long on, where McMullen moves to his left and slides to take the catch. Brandon reaches out with his hands. The ball threatens to pop out of his left hand, but he just about manages to cling on. End of an impactful knock from Hetmyer, 64 runs off 36 balls.
Is that a clean catch by McMullen? Oh, hang on, the on-umpires look satisfied with the catch, but they are actually checking for the legality of the delivery. The side-on replay comes up and the third umpire confirms that the ball is dipping below the waist height of the batter.
Lowish full toss, on off. Sherfane Rutherford swings to go down the ground. Gets it right off the toe end of the blade and it dribbles to long off for just a single.
FOUR! Skilful shot! Sharif nails the yorker, right in the blochkole, around off. Rutherford hurriedly gets his bat down and slices it with an open bat face wide of deep backward point for a four.
Off-cutter, running across, on a length, Shimron reaches out and thumps it over cover. It is mopped up by the fielder in the deep. Just a single.
Full and straight, on middle. Shimron swings early and toe-ends it back to the bowler.
Sharif tries to push it across the left-hander. It comes out as a low full toss, outside off. Hetmyer walks across the stumps and drags it to the right of deep mid-wicket. The fielder in the deep slides to his right and cuts it off. Two runs taken.
Safyaan Sharif will bowl the 19th. 3-0-38-0 so far. Can West Indies go past 190? Well, if these two keep batting till the end, even 200 is a possibility.

Shorter and going across, Hetmyer flashes hard but chops it down in front of cover for one.
Floated up, on leg, flicked through mid-wicket for one.
SIX! Wow! What a hit. Watt switches to over the wicket and tries to get the yorker in. He misses his mark by a small margin and that is enough for Rutherford to get under the ball. Sherfane slams it over wide long off for a biggie.
Half a shout for LBW but turned down! No real excitement from any of the Scottish players but they want to take a chance with the review. Slower and fuller, on middle, Rutherford gets down on a knee for the slog sweep but the ball goes past the inside edge and hits him on the back thigh. The UltraEdge shows a spike, confirming the inside edge. Scotland lose their review.
FOUR! Nicely done! Short and pushed across off, Rutherford extends his hands, waits for the ball to arrive and cuts it behind point for a boundary.
Searing yorker, at the toes. Hettie digs it out to long on for a single.

Commentary
The Stage Is Set for the Next Showdown - That wraps up this Group C fixture, where West Indies collect the two points, while late entrants Scotland will have to wait a little longer for their first win of the tournament. Two matches are now done, but one big showdown is still to come, with co-hosts India beginning their World Cup campaign against USA at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. That one gets underway very soon, so switch tabs and stay with us for all the coverage from what promises to be a cracking contest. Cheers!
The victorious skipper of West Indies - Shai Hope is pleased with the team's winning start, acknowledging there's no margin for error in the tournament. He feels they could have scored a bit more at the halfway stage, considering the par score is around 190. Hope is happy with the team's performance, particularly Shimron Hetmyer, who's batting well and scoring runs. He shifted Hetmyer to number 3 to make the batting side more dangerous, given that the opponents have many left-arm bowlers. Hope is also delighted with Romario's milestones, saying it's great to see him perform and pick crucial wickets, including the hat-trick in T20Is.
The captain of Scotland - Richie Berrington is disappointed with Scotland's finish, despite being confident of chasing the target after the first innings, thanks to their batting depth. He believes the decision to bowl first was part of the team's strategy to be ready for both batting and bowling. Berrington praises the team's positive mindset and feels they bowled well initially, but Hetmyer's knock turned the game around. Losing key batters like Bruce and himself changed the momentum. Despite the loss, he sees many positives and feels the team gained valuable experience in the Eden Gardens conditions.
Presentation Time...
Shepherd steals the show - It was not a perfect bowling performance from West Indies, but they will happily take it in an opening game, even though there is room for improvement in the field. Many expected Akeal Hosein to take the new ball, but Rovman Powell went with an all-pace attack and it paid off as they struck three times in the Powerplay, including a stunning catch from Hetmyer. Motie was excellent through the middle overs, giving nothing away and picking up a wicket, while Holder finished with three. But it was Romario Shepherd who stole the show, producing a superb hat-trick and ending with a five-wicket haul that will be remembered for a long time.
Caribbean batting blitz overwhelms Scotland - Earlier in the game, after a sluggish start from the West Indies openers, Shimron Hetmyer exploded alongside Rovman Powell, with the pair adding 81 off just 37 balls to seize control. Hetmyer finished with a scintillating 64 off 36, including a 22-ball half-century, the fastest by a West Indies batter in a T20 World Cup, while Sherfane Rutherford’s late hitting pushed the total to daunting heights. Scotland began well and closed strongly, but it was the middle overs where they lost their grip as the runs kept flowing. Currie was the pick of the bowlers, and debutant Oliver Davidson impressed with a wicket and an economical spell, but despite taking a scalp each, Safyaan Sharif and Michael Leask went for too many.
Scotland’s middle-order meltdown - Scotland made a sedate start, and losing three wickets in the Powerplay immediately put them on the back foot. The 78-run stand between Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce dragged them back into the contest as they smashed 53 runs in 4 overs to swing the momentum, but once Berrington was dismissed, everything unraveled. They lost their composure, went searching for big hits, and a four-wicket over sealed their fate. From a promising 115/3, Scotland were bundled out for 147, a collapse that will sting for quite some time.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Shimron Hetmyer is presented with the award for his knock of 64 off 36 and a stunning catch. He attributes his success to both an explosive batting performance and a brilliant catch, though he admits the catch brought him more satisfaction due to his recent dedication to improving his fielding. While he does not consider it his absolute best, he ranks the grab high on his list of achievements. Adopting a forward-thinking mindset, Hetmyer remarks that everything happens for a reason, choosing to focus on future contributions. Whether setting or chasing totals, rather than dwelling on past misses. He expresses a preference for batting at number 3 in T20s, noting that the position offers him the freedom to attack early rather than managing the pressure of finishing. Despite jokingly suggesting his teammate Romario Shepherd deserved the award for his hat-trick and five-wicket haul, Hetmyer emphasizes that the team's victory was the primary goal and reiterates their commitment to consistent execution in upcoming matches.
Men in Maroon start in style - West Indies kickstart their World Cup campaign with a fantastic win, and while the scorecard may suggest they were dominant, Scotland gave a strong account of themselves and fought hard. In the end, though, they were undone by Shimron Hetmyer’s brilliance with the bat and Romario Shepherd’s five-wicket haul, including a match-winning hat-trick that sealed the deal.
OUT! CAUGHT! And it is that man again, Romario Shepherd, with an outstanding catch. Slower one, around off, Mark Watt goes for a wild swing at it, gets it edged and the ball is flying to the left of the fielder at short third. Romario Shepherd glides to his left, puts in a dive and grabs hold of it. West Indies win by 35 runs.
Good length on the pads, Brad Currie tucks this to short fine leg for a single.
WIDE! Full and wide down the leg. Wided.
Short and on off, Mark Watt shuffles across and hits this off his gloves to the left of Romario Shepherd at short fine leg for one.
FOUR! Another one goes for a boundary down the ground. Good length on middle and off, Mark Watt pumps this right behind the bowler for a boundary in front of the sight screen this time.
FOUR! Some joy for Watt. Pitched up, around off, Mark Watt gets right behind the line of it and lofts it up and over the fielder at the mid off region for a boundary.

OUT! CAUGHT! Fifer for Romario Shepherd on the opening day. On a length around off, Safyaan Sharif looks for the lofted drive and ends up chipping this straight into the hands of Jason Holder at the mid off region. Holder makes no mistake and holds onto it. Four wickets in this over, and the Windies can see the finish line now.
Back of a length around off, Safyaan Sharif guides this to point.
Absolute scenes in the City of Joy, Kolkata. Romario Shepherd has taken a T20 World Cup hat-trick, and no one seems to catch him as he is running off in celebration. The crowd loves it as well. Also, Safyaan Sharif comes out to the middle now.
OUT! TIMBERRR!!! Romario Shepherd has picked up a hat-trick. He comes around the stumps, hits the nagging length, angling it back into the batter on off. Oliver Davidson pokes at it away from his body without any kind of footwork. The ball beats the bat on the inside and clatters into the off-pole. The off-pole does a cartwheel and the Windies celebrate wildly as Romario Shepherd completes his hat-trick.
Who faces the hat-trick ball? It will be the debutant, Oliver Davidson.
OUT! CAUGHT! Two-in-two for Romario Shepherd as Michael Leask departs for a golden duck. On a length wide of off, Michael Leask looks to go big and slogs at it. Gets it away off the cue end of his bat and the ball travels towards the cow corner region. Rovman Powell runs to his right from long on and grabs hold of it. He lands on his shoulder and looks in a bit of pain, but gets up quickly and looks fortuantely is fine. Romario Shepherd will be on a hat-trick.
West Indies are strengthening their grip on this contest. Michael Leask is the next man in.
OUT! CAUGHT! Slower one, wide and full outside off, Matthew Cross plays it straight into the hands of Sherfane Rutherford at backward point. Rutherford was positioned around that region exactly for this stroke.
Low full toss, wide of off, Mark Watt hits this to the left of Shamar Joseph at deep point for a single.

Flatter, full and outside off, Matthew Cross drills it wide of sweeper cover for a brace.
Tossed up, full and on middle, Mark Watt eases it to long on for a run.
Mark Watt replaces Tom Bruce out in the middle.
OUT! LBW! Tom Bruce has been trapped plumb in front of the stumps and he will have to walk back now. Fired around off, Tom Bruce goes down on a knee and looks to play the slog sweep but misses. Gets rapped on the back foot and just a gentle appeal is what was needed from the Windies outfit for the umpire to raise his finger. Tom Bruce sends this upstairs by using the DRS. Nothing on the UltraEdge as the ball passes the bat. Three reds on the Ball Tracking with the ball going on to smash the off-pole. Scotland lose a review along with Tom Bruce. 61 needed off 33.

On a length and on leg, Matthew Cross nudges it through mid-wicket for one.
Oh...what happened there? Short of a length and around off, Matthew Cross uses his feet and punches it through cover-point and turns around for the second run. The throw comes in at the keeper's end, where Shai Hope collects the ball but fails to whip the bails. Cross puts in a dive but the replay shows that it would not have been enough had Shai taken the bails off.
Time for the final Drinks break of the contest. The game was going away from the Windies side but a timely dismissal of Richie Berrington has given them the upper edge once again in this tight contest. Matthew Cross replaces Richie Berrington in the middle and he will have to play the perfect anchor to Tom Bruce, who has found his footing in this innings. 68 more needed off the last 40 balls.
OUT! TAKEN! A timely breakthrough for West Indies, and Jason Holder gets his 100th T20I wicket, first Windies bowler to reach that milestone. He bangs this short and outside off, rolls his fingers to take pace off. Richie Berrington backs away and cuts it but fails to get the elevation on this one. It flies straight to deep point, where Shamar Joseph makes no mistake. Berringtone departs for a fine 42 off 24, and the quick-fire 78-run stand has been broken now.

A splendid take from Shimron Hetmyer in the deep, and every Windies player goes up to celebrate with him. It is also time for Drinks now. Scotland are in early trouble, losing 3 wickets inside the Powerplay, and not a lot on the board. Windies also got to a similar start, but they did not lose any wickets in the first six overs. The Scottish need a rebuild, but they also cannot take too much time, as the asking rate will only go up. West Indies do not need to do anything different, they just need to continue as this and opportunities will arrive for them as the pressure is on the batters. Also, Tom Bruce is the next man in.
OUT! Spectacular catch! An early contender for catch of the tournament from Shimron Hetmyer. Short and around middle and leg, George Munsey initially gestures like ducking down on this but ends up pulling this flat-batted towards the right of Shimron Hetmyer at the deep backward square leg region. Shimron moves to his right and, with the ball going away from him, puts in the dive and ends up grabbing a one-handed stunner to send George Munsey back.

OUT!

Short and wide on off, there to be put away, King latches onto it but hits it flat and straight to George Munsey at backward point. Munsey leaps and tries to take the catch over his head. The ball hits him hard on the palm and pops up in front, and George Munsey takes it on the rebound. King departs for 35 (30). West Indies are 58/2.
Short and on off, Hetmyer nudges it through mid-wicket and crosses over.
Just 7 runs from the last 2 overs for West Indies. Davidson to continue. 1-0-4-0 so far.

Leg bye! Shorter and on leg, Hetmyer swings across but fails to connect. The batters cross for a leg bye as the ball dribbles to short fine leg. End of a successful over for Leask and Scotland.
Full and on middle, whipped to long on for one.
Just out of reach! This is bowled into the wicket by Leask, short and on off. Hetmyer presses back for the pull, but the ball holds up in the surface. Shimron is through his shot early, and the ball is skied off a top edge back over the bowler's head. Michael turns around and goes after it. He stretches his hands out in front, but the ball evades him. Single taken.
Full and attacking the stumps, Hetmyer firms the drive back to Leask.
Scotland finally get the reward for their discipline with the ball. Shimron Hetmyer makes his way out to the middle at number 3.
OUT! CASTLED! Immediate impact from Michael Leask. Stays around the wicket and bowls the seam-up delivery. This curves away in the air, on a nagging length, on middle. Hope stays back to flick it away but the ball sneaks past the inside edge. It clips the front pad before deflecting onto the off stump. End of a scratchy stay for the Windies' skipper. 19 (22) for Hope.
Leask begins from around the wicket, fractionally short, around leg. Hope clears the front leg and has a hack across the line but is beaten on the inside edge and wears it on the pads.

Keeps it nice and full, on off, Shai knocks it to long off and turns the strike over.
Back to bowling it full, on middle, whipped to long on for a run.
FOUR! Hammered! Brandon King is on the charge after the drinks break. Pace taken off by Safyaan, on the shorter side, outside off. Brandon gets the width to work with and he slaps it to the left of the sweeper cover for four more.
FOUR! Lovely shot! Sharif bowls it a bit too full, outside off, King just leans into the drive and threads the drive between cover and mid off for a four.
SIX! Straight as an arrow! Sharif lands it full, on middle. King jumps out of the crease and swings through the line with a straight bat. It goes over the bowler's head for a flat six.
DRINKS BREAK. Scotland have displayed a lot of discipline with the ball so far. However, they are still searching for their first breakthrough. Hope and King haven't been flashy and have respected the good balls, but they haven't gotten the desired start they would have hoped for. There are no such demons on the pitch, just a slight hold on it, nothing else. It is about time one of these two starts to tee off to zoom up the scoring rate with a lot of firepower to follow down the order. Safyaan Sharif (1-0-4-0) to bowl after the break.

Plenty of passion and pride in those anthems. The pre-match formalities are done, and we are all set to get going. Former England captain and a member of the commentary team for this World Cup, Michael Atherton, has been given the honour of ringing the bell to signal the start of play. Richie Berrington has his men in a huddle before they head out to the middle. The skipper, Shai Hope, walks out to open alongside Brandon King. Pace to start the game. The giant flags of the two nations have been rolled out. The match officials lead the way before Shai Hope and Richie Berrington lead their respective sides out for the national anthems. It will be Scotland's national anthem, first followed by the anthem of West Indies.
Scotland (Playing XI) - George Munsey, Michael Jones, Brandon McMullen, Richie Berrington (C), Tom Bruce, Matthew Cross (WK), Mark Watt, Michael Leask, Oliver Davidson (On T20I debut), Safyaan Sharif, Brad Currie.
West Indies (Playing XI) - Brandon King, Shai Hope (C/WK), Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Matthew Forde, Shamar Joseph, Gudakesh Motie.
The captain of West Indies - Shai Hope cheekily says he can't remember the last time they won the toss. Adds that they would have probably bowled as well. He highlights the fond memories the side has at this venue from a decade ago, while mentioning that he wasn’t part of the setup at the time. Also points out that there were a couple of guys from that camp who now have a lot of experience. On Hetmyer, he says that he arrived a little late but is ready to go. On the responsibility of captaincy, he says he relishes the role, describing it as very special. Shares that whenever you represent the region, it is a great feeling.
The captain of Scotland - Richie Berrington calls it a fantastic opportunity for the group, especially with the quick turnaround coming into the tournament, and says there is a really positive feeling in the camp. Berrington shares that the squad was actually scheduled to have a fitness test today, if not for the late World Cup call. He points to Scotland’s strong performances at the last World Cup as proof of what they can do and says this is another opportunity to show their quality on the big stage. Berrington also speaks about the good memories from their previous win against West Indies, but acknowledges the quality of the opposition and says he hopes his players can show the depth and quality within their own team.
TOSS - It is toss time now in Kolkata. Shai Hope and Richie Berrington are out in the middle. Hope will flip the coin and Richie will call. Heads is the call and it lands as Heads. SCOTLAND ELECT TO BOWL FIRST.
Pakistan hold their nerve - How about that for the start of the World Cup, aye? A nerve-jangling opener it was in Colombo. Pakistan have defeated Netherlands by 3 wickets, with just 3 balls to spare. Thanks to Faheem Ashraf, who played a sensational finishing role. He smashed 24 runs in the penultimate over against Logan van Beek and got the job done for his side by smashing a boundary in the final over. But credit to the Dutchmen for fighting their hearts out in their defence of a below-par total.
A thriller in Colombo - In the curtain raiser of this tournament, the Dutch are on the verge of something truly historic. After setting a modest target of 148 against Pakistan, they have counterpunched in a brilliant fashion. Pakistan are 7 wickets down, and they require 29 runs from the last two overs. By the time we wait for the toss here, you can follow all the live action by simply hopping to the other tab.
What do the records say? West Indies have played five matches in Kolkata, but outside of their watershed 2016 World Cup victory over England, the venue has largely been unkind to them with a 1-4 win-loss record in T20Is. And with a 1-0 head-to-head record in favor of the Scots, the men from the Caribbean arrive with a point to prove and resurrect the respect and legacy in the format in which they were once so dangerous and imposing. With a lot at stake, this has all the ingredients to be a spicy contest. Please stay tuned for the toss and team updates.
At the eleventh hour - Just days before the tournament began, Scotland received a call they never saw coming. Pack your bags. You’re heading to India. If not for Bangladesh’s late withdrawal, Scotland’s next outing in T20I cricket would have been a sub-regional qualifier in Copenhagen next summer. Led by Richie Berrington, they do have a decently experienced batting unit, including George Munsey, McMullen and Leask, their leading run scorers in this format. And the addition of Michael Jones and Tom Bruce to an already enviable top five only reinforces that strength. Bowling-wise, nobody comes close to Mark Watt in terms of wickets, and he would be quite a handful in these conditions, while Scotland and Brad Wheal will spearhead their pace stocks.
Same old firepower - The leadership baton has been passed to Shai Hope, and deservedly so. Since the last tournament, Hope has been West Indies’ leading run-scorer in T20I cricket, with the most half-centuries and the only centurion in that period. While recent years have been turbulent, West Indies’ batting still carries its trademark menace. Shimron Hetmyer has found form at the right time, and with power-hitters like Charles, Rutherford, Powell, and Romario Shepherd in the ranks, they retain the swashbuckling brute force. With the ball, they might look a bit thin on experience in the pace, with Holder the most senior one. But spin-wise, they do have a strong core with Hosein, Motie, and Chase.
An aim to restore the lost pride and legacy - The road to this tournament has been anything but smooth for West Indies, which has raised serious questions around consistency in the format that is long-viewed as their most preferred format. Since the last T20 World Cup, which they co-hosted with the USA, West Indies have won just 14 of their 43 matches. That stretch has yielded only three series victories, a return that underlines the uneven nature of their recent form. The two-time champions arrive with a point to prove as they rank 7th on the ICC rankings in this format.
The City of Joy is ready - It is the opening day of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, 2026 and the triple dose continues as we jump to the joyous city of Kolkata for Game 2 of the tournament. This will be the first clash from Group C as the perennial challengers, West Indies, go up against the wildcard entrants, Scotland, at the iconic Eden Gardens. On that note, hello and welcome to our coverage of what promises to be a riveting contest.
... MATCH DAY ...
Cricket’s ultimate carnival ignites - The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 descends upon the Asian subcontinent, igniting an electric atmosphere as the world's elite cricketers converge for this biennial spectacle. Co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, the tournament returns high-octane action to a region where cricket is revered as a religion. Match 2 presents a fascinating clash of styles at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata, where the historical might of the West Indies collides with the rising determination of Scotland. West Indies seeking a third crown! The West Indies enter this campaign as two-time champions, having secured titles in 2012 and 2016. India remains a cherished venue for the Windies; it was here at Eden Gardens that their 2016 triumph was sealed with legendary firepower. Led by Shai Hope, the current squad boasts a dangerous mix of veterans and explosive young talents like Sherfane Rutherford, Shimron Hetmyer, and Rovman Powell. However, their journey to the 2026 edition has been turbulent. A shock series loss to Nepal and a recent defeat against South Africa have raised concerns about their from heading into this ICC event. A major tactical silver lining has been the promotion of Shimron Hetmyer to the top of the order, where his high-impact scoring has provided much-needed aggression. To succeed on India's turning tracks, the Windies must find a way to marry their raw power with better spin-bowling depth and disciplined execution. Scotland - A lucky break and a grand opportunity - Scotland arrives via an unconventional path, stepping in as a late replacement following Bangladesh’s withdrawal. After the heartbreak of missing out during the European Regional Qualifiers, the Scots have been handed a golden ticket to compete on the grandest stage. This is a massive opportunity to build on their 2024 showing, where they proved they could compete with the world's best. Under the leadership of Richie Berrington, the team relies on the reliable George Munsey and the all-round capabilities of Michael Leask and Brandon McMullen. While their team spirit is their greatest asset, their recent form has been shaky, particularly in the warm-up matches. Facing a powerhouse like the West Indies in the opener will be the ultimate test of whether they can capitalize on this unexpected second chance. Head-to-Head history favors the brave - While the West Indies hold the historical edge in stature, the head-to-head record in T20 World Cups tells a different story. In their only previous meeting in this tournament back in 2022, Scotland pulled off a stunning 42-run upset against the Caribbean giants. That victory remains one of Scotland's finest hours, and they will be drawing immense confidence from the fact that they have already proven they can outplay this specific opponent on the world stage. Form (Last 5 completed T20Is, most recent first) - West Indies - WLLWL | Scotland - LLWWL. Match expectations - The buzz at Eden Gardens is palpable, with fans eager to see if the West Indies can reclaim their home away from home or if Scotland will repeat history. It is a battle between Caribbean six-hitting flair and the disciplined, gritty tactical approach of the Scots. For the Windies, it’s about redemption and for Scotland, it’s about proving they belong among the elite once and for all.
Four wickets in this over, and the Windies can see the finish line now.
