Commentary

Two down, one more to go - Well, we have witnessed a couple of intriguing games on Friday, the 13th, but the action isn't over yet. After David vs Goliath early on, and a battle of the equals after that, it is now time to head into a game where one team is looking for its second win, and the other is looking to get off the mark in this edition of the tournament. USA are taking on Netherlands down south in Chennai, and the USA have already started their batting innings. You can simply switch tabs and tune in to our coverage of that clash, which should be a very close one if both teams play to their potential. Cheers!

The captain of United Arab Emirates - Muhammad Waseem, (on being asked what he said to the team at the time of the inning break), says that he just went up and made them realise that he has full trust in the team and he had a very positive feeling that they could chase the run. On their weaknesses, he says that they need to get better with their batting and prepare for the upcoming matches. He concludes his interview by praising the way Junaid Siddique bowled, and he hopes that he continues his form in the next games as well.

The captain of Canada - Dilpreet Bajwa says that they were expecting to score 160-170 but managed to get to 150, which was defendable. Gives credit to Aryansh Sharma and Sohaib Khan for the way they batted. Reckons that the dew factor does help the chasing side in the evening, but mentions that the fast bowlers tried to stick to their lengths, which didn't quite happen. Finishes by saying that the middle order and the spin bowling are coming along nicely but they need to improve with the bat up top and be better with their lines and lengths in terms of pace bowling.

Let us listen in to what the captains have to say...

Let's recap the first innings - Dilpreet Bajwa won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to bat first in the dry afternoon conditions. Junaid Siddique was prolific inside the Powerplay with the ball, and the UAE picked up 3 wickets in the first 6 overs. Then came the resistance from Harsh Thaker and Navneet Dhaliwal, Canada's repair-job experts. UAE found it difficult to get breakthroughs, but once Dhaliwal got run out, there was an opening for the bowling side. Junaid got a plethora of wickets at the death and ended up with a five-fer, but Thaker notched up a fifty and Dilon Heyliger's last-ball six took Canada to exactly 150 runs.

Canada's late slip-up - Canada didn't have the runs on the board but what they did have was a solid start with the ball in hand. They kept things tight and got a wicket early on. The spinners were brilliant through the middle phase and former skipper, Saad Bin Zafar, ran through the UAE middle order, picking up 3 wickets. With 56 needed off the last 4 overs, one would back the bowling side a bit more, but the Canadian pacers fumbled things big time. First, it was Dilon Heyliger, who got belted away in the 17th over and then Kaleem Sana, who had bowled brilliantly in the Powerplay, but couldn't come back and do the job in the crucial 19th over. A disappointing defeat for Canada, one that will hurt more as they were in with a big chance.

Player of the Match - Junaid Siddique (4-0-35-5) is handed the award for his fine bowling effort. Regarding the pitch, he says that it was good to bowl on. Adds that they had prepared before the match how they were going to bowl, but he was trying to hit the hard lengths more. Continues that he was also mixing up his quicker deliveries with slower one which certainly worked for him. Ends by saying that after the first inning got over, they were pretty confident that 150 was chasable.

UAE take the spoils - By no means was this a straightforward run chase, and the UAE have themselves to blame for it. There was a lack of intent in the first 3-4 overs and they also lost their talismanic skipper pretty early. They did manage to get 17 runs in the final over of the Powerplay, but couldn't build on it after the drinks break. UAE scored only 43 runs from overs 7 to 14 and lost 3 wickets as well but luckily for them, Aryansh Sharma was there from the start and stood up to the task. He struck a solid half-century, finishing unbeaten on 74 off 53 balls. But it was the carnage from Sohaib Khan that really turned the game on its head. 17 off the 17th over, 13 off the 18th over and then the hammer blow came in the 19th over when UAE amassed 18 runs to nearly close the doors. They managed to finish things off with just a couple of balls remaining, even though Sohaib got out on 51.

An 'Associate' classic - A fine game of cricket, but in the end, it is the United Arab Emirates who get their first win of this edition and get on the points board. Heartbreak for Canada, who managed the run chase really well for about 15 or so overs, but simply couldn't put the game to bed heading into the death overs.

19.41

UAE WIN BY 5 WICKETS! It is short and around off, and Arfan hangs back before smashing it over mid-wicket. The ball races away and the UAE players are already charging onto the field before it reaches the fence. In fact, it's a single as the batters complete the required run before that. The celebrations erupt, a fine turnaround sealed in style. Smiles all around in the UAE camp, while Canada are left stunned, wondering how this one slipped through their fingers.

The next batter is in. It is Muhammad Arfan.

19.3W

OUT! CAUGHT! Oh, no! What have you done, Sohaib Khan? With just one needed for the win, Khan tries to finish things off in style and holes out. Banged in on a hard length and angled across off, Khan looks to pull the ball when the length is not quite there and is early into the shot as well. He miscues it over mid on where Nicholas Kirton backtracks and pouches it safely. 1 needed off 3 balls.

19.21

Full-length delivery, on middle, Aryansh Sharma tucks it through square leg and gets a single. SCORES ARE LEVEL!

19.16

SIX! Take a bow, Aryansh Sharma. He's fought hard all the way, right from the start and he has now taken his team to the brink of victory. Short of a length, over middle and leg, Sharma leans across to get inside the line and whacks the pull over deep square leg for a biggie. Just 2 needed now off 5 balls.

Final over is coming up. Just 8 needed off 6 balls, and Jaskarandeep Singh has the ball in hand. Can he pull off something miraculous?

FIFTY FOR SOHAIB KHAN! Everyone in the UAE dugout is on their feet to applaud this masterclass. This is much fuller, on middle. Sohaib Khan drives it downtown. The long-on fielder moves to his left and the batter gets a brace. He lifts his willow and soaks in the cheers. It really has been a game-changing knock from Khan. It is a fifty off just 28 balls, the fastest by an Associate player in this edition of the T20 World Cup, informs the on-air commentator. A knock full of intent, timing and fearless strokeplay. 8 needed off 6 balls.

18.54

FOUR! Unlucky again for the bowler but not good enough bowling given the field setting. Short ball around off, around head height. Sohaib Khan goes hard at the pull and gets a top edge that flies over the keeper's head and rolls away into the fence behind. Just 10 needed off 7 and UAE seem to have turned it around.

18.51nb

NO BALL! Oh my goodness. Kaleem Sana aims for a yorker here, but spills out a full toss, above the waist height, outside off. Sohaib Khan misses on his swat. Free-Hit coming up...

18.41

Full, on leg, Aryansh Sharma flicks it to deep square leg for one.

18.34

FOUR! Aryansh Sharma gets a bit lucky here! Kaleem Sana bends his back and offers a bouncer, outside off. Aryansh Sharma swings his blade to pull it away, but gets the top edge. The ball flies over the right of the keeper and bounces away to deep third for four runs. 16 needed off 9.

18.24

FOUR! Blazed away in a flash. It is too full and outside off, and Aryansha pounces, hammering it between mid off and extra cover. The ball races away as if chased by a train. 20 needed off 10 now, and the pressure shifts ever so slightly.

18.12

A slower short ball to start the penultimate over, around the ribs of the batter. Aryansh Sharma mistimes his pull to the vacant deep backward square leg region. The fielder moves to his right, but the batter gets a couple of runs.

UAE need 26 off 12 balls and Kaleem Sana is back on to bowl his final over. A wicket and 11 runs off his 3 overs thus far.

Play and a miss! It is short and angling away outside off. Sohaib rocks back, shaping to muscle it over the leg side, but the ball whistles past the bat. Two dots to finish the over, yet it still yields a handy 13 runs.

17.50

It is a near yorker, speared wide outside off. Sohaib lunges and stretches to drive but gets it off the toe end, trickling back to the bowler. Jaskarandeep gathers and has a shy at the striker's end, rattling the stumps, but Sohaib has his back leg planted safely inside the crease.

A slight halt in play. There seems to be an issue with one of the bails as it isn't lightning up and the umpires are gettinng it fixed.

17.42

On a length, angling outside off, Sohaib Khan looks to heave it across the line, but it gets sliced from the outer part of his bat. The ball bounces off toward the left of the backward point fielder. However, Khan does exceptionally well to get the brace. Just after reaching the non-striker's end, he slips, but instantly gets back and dives to reach home safely.

17.30

Short, outside off, this time, Singh just manages to keep the line inside the tramline. Sohaib Khan goes for a wild swing but fails to connect.

17.31wd

WIDE! Pressure on the bowler! Much fuller, but sprays it beyond the tramline. Sohaib Khan makes a leave.

17.26

SIX! Only just, but it clears the man. Jaskarandeep Singh goes fuller on off, shaping it away. Sohaib Khan shuffles across, drops to one knee and launches the slog sweep over long on. The fielder springs up, arm outstretched, but the ball sails a whisper beyond his fingertips and into the stands. 10 off the first two balls, 29 needed off 16 balls.

Commentary

We are back for the all-important run chase! The umpires are back out in the middle and so are the players of Canada, who get into a quick huddle and take their places on the field. It will be the duo of Muhammad Waseem and Aryansh Sharma to open the innings for the UAE and it will be Sharma to take strike first up. Kaleem Sana will start proceedings with the ball. Let's go...

... The Run Chase ...

Junaid Siddique's five-star show - With the ball, it was the Junaid Siddique show for the United Arab Emirates. He was the wrecker-in-chief, claiming a magnificent five-wicket haul that included both openers and the set batter, Thaker. Muhammad Jawadullah offered great support with an economical spell, though the other bowlers remained wicketless. The UAE will be happy to chase 151, but their batters will need to apply themselves well to cross the finish line.

Harsh Thaker's fighting fifty - Despite losing his partner, Harsh Thaker continued to fight and brought up a well-deserved half-century. He anchored the innings brilliantly before falling in the 18th over, looking to accelerate. While the recovery was commendable given the early collapse, the lower order couldn't quite capitalize fully at the death. Canada eventually finished with 150 runs on the board.

Canada end up with 150 on board - Canada had a nightmare start, losing three quick wickets inside the Powerplay to find themselves reeling at 39/3. Skipper Dilpreet Bajwa, Yuvraj Samra, and Nicholas Kirton all fell early, putting the team in deep trouble. However, Navneet Dhaliwal and Harsh Thaker steadied the ship with a gritty 58-run partnership. The recovery was halted in the 13th over by a freak dismissal. Dhaliwal was run out for 34 after his bat got stuck in the pitch just inches short of the crease while his foot was in the air.

SIX! The extra ball has cost Junaid and UAE. Junaid goes for the slower short ball again and bowls it over middle. Dilon Heyliger lays into the pull and clobbers it over wide long on for a biggie to make it 14 runs in the final over. Canada do get to 150 as they finish with 150/7 on the board!

19.61wd

WIDE! Hard length, pushed well wide outside off.

19.5W

OUT! CAUGHT! Swung away leg side but straight to the man in the deep and Junaid Siddique has a five-fer. Junaid stays around the wicket and angles it in, on the back of a length. Saad Bin Zafar hangs back and lines it up, pulling it nicely towards deep mid-wicket. However, it is hit straight to Haider Ali, and he makes no mistake. What a spell from Junaid! Also, Dilon Heyliger walks out to bat next.

Can Canada push to 150?

19.51wd

WIDE! Junaid goes for the wide yorker now but spills it beyond the tramline outside off.

19.44

FOUR! The former Canadian skipper gets a boundary away, much-needed as well for his side. Back-of-the-hand again from Junaid, slow and a bit short outside off. Saad Bin Zafar waits for eternity but does well to hammer it over extra cover for a boundary.

19.31

Slower ball, short on leg but doesn't rise much. Singh waits for it and helps it wide of short fine leg for a single.

19.21

Short over middle and leg, swatted aerially and down to long on for a single.

Saad Bin Zafar is the new man in.

19.1W

OUT! CAUGHT! Junaid Siddique is having a ball out there in the middle as he gets his fourth wicket now. Slower ball, bowled shorter and around off. Shreyas Movva charges at the ball but gets cramped up and has to play an unorthodox shot. He ends up hitting it like a tennis smash and mistimes it towards mid off. Alishan Sharafu takes the catch and Canada are 136/6 with 5 balls remaining.

Hard length on middle, Singh backs away a bit and smacks it to deep cover for a run. Just five runs off the 19th over and Canada might not even get to 150 here.

18.51

Back of a length and angled across off, Jaskarandeep Singh hangs back and leans across, pulling it down to the right of long on for one more.

18.41

Pitched up, full and around off, Movva hangs back and forces the lofted shot over covers for just a single.

18.30

Jawadullah looks for the yorker but errs on the fuller side. Movva charges down the pitch to heave but ends up getting an under-edge on the full toss and the ball goes back to the keeper.

18.21

Pitched up, full and on leg, Singh flicks it through square leg and turns the strike over.

18.11

Harsh Thaker departs after a fine knock. Jaskarandeep Singh walks in to bat now.

OUT! CAUGHT! Fifty and out for Harsh Thaker! Junaid Siddique takes the pace off and bowls it short and outside off. The ball grips and turns in a bit. Thaker hangs on the back foot and throws his hands at it but slices it up towards the extra cover region. Mayank Kumar takes a few steps back and holds on to a simple chance. Canada are now 129/5 with 14 balls remaining in the innings.

17.31

Good length, angled into middle and leg, tucked away wide of deep mid-wicket for a single. The batters could have pushed for two there.

17.21

17.14

FOUR! That is timed to perfection. A good length ball outside off, and Sohaib Khan opens his stance, leans into it, and drills it past long off with the confidence of a man who knows exactly where the gaps are. The 50-run stand is also up between these two.

UAE need 39 off 18 balls. Dilpreet Bajwa will be looking at his remaining bowling options as the lights take full effect in Delhi. For now, Jaskarandeep Singh will continue.

14.41

Fractionally short over off and middle, pulled away in front of mid-wicket for a single.

14.32

Just enough on it from Sharma. Short ball outside off, Aryansh Sharma hangs back and looks to play the ramp but the ball comes slower off the deck. The ball gets lifted over the backtracking fielder at backward point and the batters pick up a couple of runs.

14.21

Good length on middle, played with a straight bat and back past the bowler for a single.

14.10

Right off the sticker on the bat. A heavy short ball, over middle and Sohaib Khan miscues the pull completely and ends up nearly lobbing it back to the bowler.

DRINKS BREAK! United Arab Emirates are under pressure. They have 69 more runs to chase in 36 deliveries with six wickets left in hand. Aryansh Sharma is timing his shots really well, but the only problem is that no batter has been able to provide firm support to him. Canada will be looking to keep the pressure on the opposition as the required run rate is around 11. Which also means the UAE batters will have to deal with plenty of boundaries to stay in the hunt. Dilon Heyliger is back into the attack now.

With 6 overs left, there is a possibility of getting to 160 but United Arab Emirates will look to pick up a few more wickets and restrict their opponents to under 150 runs. The death overs are going to be crucial as a difference of 10-15 runs can really shift the momentum one way or another. Haider Ali is back on to finish his spell. 3 overs for 23 runs for him so far.

Very tight call, as the third umpire is zooming in on the first replay, where the bat gets stuck in the turf, to see if there is anything behind the line or not. National anthems are sung. Done with the pre-game formalities and it is now time to play. The umpires are out in the middle and the UAE skipper, Muhammad Waseem leads his team in a huddle before the players spread out on the field. It will be Dilpreet Bajwa to open the innings for Canada alongside Yuvraj Samra. UAE to start with spin as Haider Ali takes the new ball. Let's play...

Pitch report -  Nick Knight is pitchside and reckons the weather is absolutely gorgeous, pleasantly warm without being overbearing. He informs that the same surface that India played on last night will be used again. Mentions that it did hold a touch at times, but overall it proved to be a good batting wicket. With this being an afternoon game, Carlos Brathwaite feels the pitch still looks fresh and offers praise to the groundstaff for their preparation. The big West Indian informs that historically, spin has ruled here in Delhi, 10 wickets for 88 runs to the tweakers compared to 7 for 236 for the quicks. Also adds that the grass has browned a touch, suggesting a lack of moisture, which should make it play better for batting. Even so, the consensus remains the same, feels Carlos. On this ground, it is often spin to win.

Big upset in Colombo - Breaking news coming in from Colombo. ZIMBABWE HAVE BEATEN AUSTRALIA. They say history repeats itself and Zimbabwe have taken a leaf out of the 2007 T20 World Cup and have handed the Aussies a hefty defeat in the first match of the day. The first major upset of this year's competition and this result now blows Group B wide open. Australia will have to beat Sri Lanka in all likeliness and that won't be easy in these conditions, against a buoyant home crowd.

United Arab Emirates' skipper - Muhammad Waseem says that it is their second game on the same wicket, and they were looking to bat as well. He says that they will try to restrict them to a low total now. Me further says that they don't have any total in mind, but they will give their best. Ends by mentioning two changes in their side.

The captain of Canada - Dilpreet Bajwa says that they want to bat first as they want to put runs on the board and put pressure on the chasing side. Reckons that the wicket looks like a belter as they saw in the last game and is relishing the captaincy pressure. Informs that they are going with an unchanged side.

United Arab Emirates (Playing XI) - Aryansh Sharma (WK), Muhammad Waseem (C), Alishan Sharafu, Mayank Kumar, Sohaib Khan, Harshit Kaushik, Muhammad Arfan, Muhammad Farooq (In for Dhruv Parashar), Haider Ali, Junaid Siddique, Muhammad Jawadullah (In for Muhammad Rohid).

Canada (Unchanged Playing XI) - Dilpreet Bajwa (C), Yuvraj Samra, Navneet Dhaliwal, Nicholas Kirton, Shreyas Movva (WK), Harsh Thaker, Saad Bin Zafar, Jaskarandeep Singh, Dilon Heyliger, Kaleem Sana, Ansh Patel.

TOSS - It's toss time in Delhi. Dilpreet Bajwa and Muhammad Waseem are out in the middle. The coin goes up and lands in favour of Dilpreet Bajwa. Canada elect to BAT first.

Battle of the spinners - Canada's chinaman Ansh Patel impressed with his variations and composure despite the result, while for the UAE, Haider Ali, the slow left arm orthodox bowler, was miserly in his four overs. These two spinners could well shape the fortunes of their respective teams, especially through the middle overs. Stay tuned for the toss and team news.

Promise and Problems - The opening games for both teams followed a similar script. There were sparks of promise with the bat from a couple of names, but the bowling units were taken to the cleaners and will be under pressure to respond.

Greetings all! Welcome to our coverage of Match 20, which sees Canada take on the UAE at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. It will be only the second T20I meeting between these two sides, and both are coming off defeats, so they will be eager to get points on the board.

... MATCH DAY ...

Match intro - The focus of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 shifts to the bustling capital of India as Canada takes on the United Arab Emirates at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. This Group D encounter is essentially a knockout game for both sides. After suffering heavy defeats in their opening matches against full member nations, Canada and UAE are desperate to get points on the board. With the Super Eight dream hanging by a thread, this match promises a fierce battle between two top-tier nations fighting for survival. Canada's crusade - Canada’s return to the big stage started on a rough note with a 57-run loss to South Africa. The pace and bounce of the Proteas attack exposed gaps in their batting lineup, though there were sparks of resistance. Captain Dilpreet Bajwa will be urging his top order to show more composure. The spotlight will be on the explosive Yuvraj Samra and the experienced Navneet Dhaliwal to provide a solid platform. If their bowling unit, led by the left-arm pacer Kaleem Sana, can find its rhythm early, Canada has the firepower to put the UAE under immense pressure. UAE’s urgency - The UAE had a forgettable outing in their opener, being crushed by New Zealand by 10 wickets. Their batting did well, but their bowlers had no answer to the Kiwi openers. However, led by the dynamic Muhammad Waseem, the Emirates side is known for its resilience. They will rely heavily on Waseem’s aggressive starts and the steady presence of Alishan Sharafu in the middle order. With a bowling attack that includes the crafty Junaid Siddique, UAE will look to exploit Canada's occasional weakness against spin and disciplined seam bowling. Pitch and conditions - The Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi is known for its short boundaries and generally batter-friendly tracks. However, it can also be low and slow, bringing spinners into the game as the match wears on. With it being an afternoon start, the heat will be a major factor. The pitch is expected to be dry, possibly aiding turn. The captain winning the toss will likely choose to bat first, aiming to set a total. Form (Last 5 completed T20Is, most recent first) - Canada - LWWWW | UAE - LLLLW. Looking ahead - This is a battle of equals. Historically, the UAE has had a slight edge in experience against top-tier opposition, but Canada’s recent run in the Americas qualifiers showed they are a dangerous unit when confident. The short boundaries in Delhi suit Canada's power hitters, but the UAE’s spin attack might enjoy the afternoon conditions. It will likely come down to which batting lineup forgets their previous collapse faster. The UAE’s experience in subcontinental conditions might just give them the upper hand in a thriller. Who are you backing for the win?
