Commentary
We are back with the chase. The Australian opening pair of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head has walked out in the middle. Shafiq Jan has the ball in his hand to open the bowling attack for Oman.
... The Run Chase ...
Aussie bowlers strangle Oman - Australia’s multifaceted bowling attack dismantled the Oman lineup with surgical precision. Adam Zampa spearheaded the effort with 4 wickets, while Glenn Maxwell and Xavier Bartlett picked up two each. While a target of 105 should be well within the reach of Australia's powerhouse batting order, Oman will be looking to start well with early wickets.
Happy with the team's effort - The Australian pacer, Xavier Bartlett, is up for a chat, and he says the wicket came out pretty good. There was a little bit of swing on offer early on, so the plan was to pitch it up and try to put the ball in the right areas. Xavier feels the way they came out as a bowling unit was special, especially the spinners through the middle overs, who maintained control and kept the pressure on. He admits it has been a disappointing campaign overall, but mentions that Mitchell Marsh told the group to keep pushing and finish strongly.
Wasim Ali stands tall - While the rest of the batting order struggled to apply themselves against a world-class attack, Wasim Ali emerged as the standout performer for Oman. He played a steady and composed knock of 32, showing the temperament required to handle the Australian variations. Unfortunately, he lacked support from the other end, as the Oman batting line-up failed to convert starts into something significant.
Oman’s Powerplay resilience - Despite losing a wicket on ball one, Oman showed remarkable spirit during the initial fielding restrictions. They managed to score 47 runs in the first 6 overs, finding the boundary frequently enough to keep the scoreboard moving. Skipper Jatinder Singh and Karan Sonavale played the ball on its merit, stitching together a brief partnership that momentarily stabilized the innings. However, their efforts weren't significant enough to build a platform for a high total as the Australian bowlers continued to strike at regular intervals.
Clinical start from the Aussie attack - Australia have bundled Oman out for a mere 104 inside 17 overs. Australia’s bowling unit looked locked in from the very first delivery of the contest. Xavier Bartlett set the tone immediately, steaming in to dismiss Aamir Kaleem for a golden duck on the opening ball. The Australian pacers maintained high intensity throughout the innings, rarely offering any room for the Oman batters to settle.
OUT! BOWLED! Two in two for Adam Zampa. Australia complete the clean-up job. Oman have been bowled out for 104 in 16.2 overs. Zampa offers flight and serves the googly, keeping the stumps in play. Shafiq Jan gets down on a knee and goes hard on the slog sweep. The ball is a bit too full for the shot, and it goes under the bat before crashing into the woodwork. A golden duck for Jan. Zampa ends with a four-wicket haul. Adam now has 44 wickets in T20 World Cups. He is second behind Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan (50), as informed by Mark Howard.
Oman are 9 down for 104 now. Shafiq Jan is the last batter to walk out in the middle for Oman.
OUT! CAUGHT! Shakeel Ahmed holes out. Looped by Zampa, full and on off. Shakeel Ahmed spots the ball above his eyeline and he swings through the line. The bat turns a bit in his hand and he mistimes it towards long on. Xavier Bartlett runs across to his right in the deep and slides to take a fine catch. Third wicket for Zampa.

Uppish but safe! The length is dragged back a bit, on middle, Odedra checks his shot and chips it to the left of the man at catching mid-wicket. There is a misfield, and the batters think about sneaking in a run, but they eventually decide against it.
Tossed up, fuller and on off, Jay leans on and blocks it out.
FOUR! Nicely done! Sliding across off, on a length. Jay Odedra stays leg side of the ball and lets the ball come to him. He knows that there is no one at slip. Just makes use of the angle and the pace on the ball. Steers it fine of short third and gets off the mark with a boundary.
8 down with 100 on the board and Jay Odedra walks out next in the middle to bat for Oman.
OUT! CASTLED! Another one bites the dust. The last of the recognised batters falls for Oman. From around the wicket, on a nagging length in line with the off stump. This does not turn at all and slides on with the arm. Ali hangs his bat out without any real conviction. The ball goes past the inside edge and clips the top of the off pole. 5th bowled dismissal of the innings.
Shorter and on off, Ahmed dabs it behind point and scampers through for a quick single. 100 comes up for Oman.
Overthrow! Full and darted into the left-hander. Ali steps out, takes it on the full and firms the drive to Glenn Maxwell. Maxi spots Wasim out of the crease and he fires in a throw. It is wide of the keeper and Josh Inglis cannot make a clean stop. It rolls behind for a single.

Slider, across the batter, Wasim Ali looks to prod in front and keep it out but gets beaten.
LEG BYE! Darted onto the pads, Shakeel Ahmed misses out on the tickle. Gets it brushed off his pads for a leg bye.
Zampa looks to buy a wicket by tossing this over the eyeline of Shakeel, around off. Shakeel Ahmed chips this to the right of Matt Renshaw at long off and takes two.
Quicker one, onto the pads, Wasim Ali tucks this through square leg for one.
FOUR! Smashed away for four. Tossed up, around off, Wasim Ali stays leg side and hammers this with a straight bat, down the ground for a boundary to the left of long off.

Full and on middle and off, Shakeel Ahmed taps this to short cover for a dot. Just 1 run and a wicket off this Glenn Maxwell over.
Flighted, on off, Shakeel Ahmed pushes this to covers again.
Fired into the batter, on middle and off. Shakeel Ahmed defends this to covers.
DRINKS BREAK! Wickets have fallen at regular intervals, and Oman have struggled to build any real momentum in their innings. That said, they have not gone into a shell. The batters have continued to play their shots and look for scoring opportunities despite the setbacks. With Oman now into the tail, Australia will be looking to finish the job swiftly. Shakeel Ahmed is the new batter.
OUT! LBW! 50 T20I wickets for Glenn Maxwell. He bowls this from wide of the crease and around the stumps, slanting it into the batter around middle and leg. Jiten Ramanandi tries to get behind the line and block it out but misses and gets thud onto the front pad. A loud appeal for LBW from the Aussies and the umpire acknowledges this with a raised finger. After some consultation from Ali at the other end, Jiten Ramanandi sends this upstairs. Nothing on the UltraEdge as the ball passes the bat and three reds on the Ball Tracker with the ball thumping into the leg-pole cements the on-field decision of OUT. Pommie Mbangwa informs on air that Glenn Maxwell becomes only the second player in T20Is to achieve the remarkable feat of 50 catches, 50 wickets and 2500 runs, with the other player being Sikandar Raza.
Fuller on off, Jiten Ramanandi defends this to the right of Glenn for a dot.
Floated around the pads, Wasim Ali tucks this through mid-wicket for a run.
Commentary
Curtains fall on the group stage - With that, we are done with the first phase of the tournament, but the action keeps coming. The competition now moves into the Super 8 stage, with 12 teams bowing out and 8 still in the hunt for the title. The 8 teams have been split into two groups, with Group 2 comprising the group stage runners-up, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and England. Group 1 features the group toppers in India, South Africa, the West Indies and Zimbabwe. The Super 8s get underway on Saturday, 21st February, when New Zealand take on Pakistan at Colombo's R Premadasa Stadium. The first ball is scheduled for 1.30 pm GMT. We look forward to having your company then. It's goodbye for now. Cheers!
We could not be more disappointed - Australia's skipper, Mitchell Marsh, calls it a missed opportunity and says it is a bitterly disappointed change room. He mentions that the group had been building towards this World Cup for the last two years, which makes the early exit even harder to digest. He gives credit to Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe, wishing them the best for the Super 8 stage. Reflecting on conditions, he says the wickets they played on did not spin a lot. He believes they had the squad to get the job done and still stands by that belief, but admits that one loss in a tournament like this can quickly put you on the back foot. Marsh concedes that they were not able to deliver when it mattered most. He points out that there are strong leaders within Cricket Australia and that they will look into this campaign. Further says that when you fail, there are always valuable lessons to take away. He admits he could not be more disappointed with how things have unfolded. Mitch adds that the team will head home, reflect on the campaign honestly, and then move on.
Grateful for the opportunity - The captain of Oman, Jatinder Singh expresses immense pride in his team for the opportunity to compete in the 2026 T20 World Cup, though he acknowledges that the tournament journey did not go as planned. He identifies a significant gap in their preparation, noting that while the squad gave their absolute best on the field, the level of competition they faced leading up to the event was insufficient. Singh points out that playing primarily domestic-level cricket rather than high-intensity competitive fixtures left the team underprepared for the demands of a global stage. Ultimately, he credits his players for their effort but stresses that better preparation is the key missing piece for the side moving forward.
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Oman never took off with the bat - With rain in the lead-up to the game and the pitch having been under covers, it was always going to be a challenge against the Australian quicks after being asked to bat first. That proved to be the case as Xavier Bartlett struck early blows, and Oman's batters were found wanting with their footwork against the moving ball. The damage through the middle overs was then inflicted by Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell, who ensured there was no way back into the contest for the Asian side.
A cakewalk for the Aussies - Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head went about their business with authority, with Marsh in particular setting the tone for the chase. There was one opportunity in the first over when the Aussie skipper was out LBW, but Oman chose not to review. Shakeel Ahmed held his own with the ball and went on to dismiss Travis Head, but the rest of the attack struggled to contain the onslaught. Australia wrapped things up emphatically with Marsh staying unbeaten on 64 while Josh Inglis provided the finishing touches.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH - Adam Zampa receives the award for his stellar four-wicket haul (4/21 in 3.2 overs). Zampa shares a candid reflection on Australia's early exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup, describing the current period as rough and quiet for the squad. Despite his success against Oman, Zampa admits the tournament is a personal disappointment and expresses a heavy sense of responsibility for not meeting his own standards in the game against Sri Lanka. Zampa notes that while finding wickets tonight feels good, the result is bittersweet. Having spent the past 2 years preparing for this event, he feels he let the team down when it mattered most. Ultimately, the leg-spinner concludes that no individual accolade can mask the collective frustration of failing to progress to the Super 8s.
A consolation win for Australia - The 2021 champions sign off on a high in what has been a disappointing campaign for them. They level the record for the quickest chase in Men's T20 World Cup history when the target has been more than 100 runs, as informed by the on-air commentators. England are the joint-holders of the record, having chased down 116 with 62 balls to spare against the USA in the 2024 edition. For Oman, it was a game to forget in what has been a tough tournament overall. There will certainly be learnings to take away from this campaign, but they head back home without registering a win.
FOUR! Australia win this game by 9 wickets with more than 10 overs to spare. Back of a length on middle and leg, Josh Inglis punches this on the up. Gets it back over the bowler's head for a boundary to seal the game for the Aussies.
Full and wide of off, Mitchell Marsh drives this to long off for a single. SCORES ARE LEVEL.
Good length on the pads, slower one. Josh Inglis tucks this through mid-wicket for a run.
FOUR! Short and around off, Josh Inglis has a go at it and cuts this over the fielder at point for a boundary. 100 comes up for the Aussies.

OUT! CAUGHT AND BOWLED! Shakeel completes the catch and brings out Cristiano Ronaldo's SIUU celebration. Under-cutter, around middle and off, Travis Head goes down on a knee and looks to slog sweep this one. Gets a top edge and the ball hangs high into the dark skies towards the square leg region. Shakeel Ahmed and the keeper both go for it. Shakeel has a look at the keeper but still goes for it. Shoulder barges him and almost drops it, but gets lucky as the ball deflects off his hands onto his chest and he holds onto it.

SIX! Out of the park from the Aussie skipper. Full toss and on middle and off, Mitchell Marsh slogs this right from the middle of his bat and deposits this deep into the grass banks around the mid-wicket region for a huge six. 19 more required for Australia.
Full and on off, Travis Head pushes this down to long off for a run.
Darted across the batter at 104.9 kph. Travis Head looks to cut this one but misses out.

Floated into the pads, Mitchell Marsh punches this down to long off for a single.
Short of a length on middle and off, Travis Head pulls this to the right of deep mid-wicket for a run.
DRINKS BREAK! This has been quite the onslaught from the Australian opening pair, with Mitchell Marsh leading the charge in particular. Oman have been put under immense pressure and are struggling to find answers as the chase races ahead at a rapid pace. Matthew Hayden informs that the record for the fastest chase of 100 or more runs in a T20 World Cup match is under serious threat. The current benchmark stands at 9.4 overs, and with the way this chase is unfolding, that record is in danger.

That sounded so sweet! Travis Head throws his head back as he picks out the fielder in the deep. Jan digs it in short, over off and middle. Travis gets his hands high and drags the pull. Hits it flat and on the bounce to deep square leg. They cross.

An early chance missed by Oman! Tailing back in sharply, full and on middle. Marsh charges down the track and ends up yorking himself. Just about manages to dig it out by bringing his bat out in front. Well, well, the replays show that the ball actually clipped the front pad first. There was half a shout from the bowler but he got no support from anyone else. The Ball Tracking has the ball crashing into the middle stump.
FOUR! Off the edge! Better line and length from the bowler, though. In the channel on off, on a length. A loose waft away from his body by Marsh. The ball catches the outside edge and skips across the turf. The deep third fielder is beaten to his left.
FOUR! Gets it away! Jan looks to bowl it short but this comes at waist height, on middle. Marsh swivels on the pull. He does not get it from the middle of the bat but gets it through the vacant mid-wicket region and it races away.
On a hard length, on off, Marsh stands tall on his toes and dabs it to point.
FOUR! Beautiful! Pitched up by Jan in search of swing. Ends up being a bit too full, around off. Marsh leans into the drive and plays a punchy drive between cover and mid off for the first boundary of the chase.
Marsh and Australia are on their way! Jan gets the ball to angle into the right-hander, on a good length. Mitchell waits on the back foot and nudges it to the left of deep square leg for a couple of runs.

An excellent review from Mitchell Marsh and Australia gets another one. Half the Oman side is done with the bat. Vinayak Shukla is the next batter out in the middle.
OUT! LBW! Australia get the review right. Full and on off, Mohammad Nadeem gets down on a knee and reaches out in front for the paddle. The ball sneaks under the gloves and goes on to hit the crouched back thigh. An appeal for LBW, but it is turned down. Adam Zampa asks Josh Inglis if there was any glove. Mitchell Marsh has a word with the keeper and the bowler and eventually takes the review. No bat or glove involved, confirmed by UltraEdge. Ball Tracking comes up as three reds with the ball crashing into the top of the middle stump. The on-field decision is overturned.
Full and quick, attacking the front pad. Ali brings his bat out in front and wrists it to deep square leg for a single.

Wasim Ali is safe! Green bashes the surface, on middle. Ali swivels in the crease for the pull but he is hurried. He can only complete half of his bat swing and the ball lobs off the splice of the blade. Green moves forward in his follow-through and gets low while sticking out his right hand. The replays show that the ball got to him on the half-volley and Cameron could not get his hand under the ball to scoop the catch.
Has this been taken by Green? Only Josh Inglis could be seen appealing, and Green is not that interested as he starts walking to the start of his run-up. The replay shows that the ball had bounced just before Green held onto it. A good effort nonetheless.

DRINKS BREAK! Oman have reached 47 for3 after 6 overs in their final World Cup group match against Australia. Despite losing a wicket on the very first ball of the innings, the Oman batters have maintained a steady scoring rate by aggressively punishing loose deliveries. Xavier Bartlett may have had another to his tally if Glenn Maxwell had not dropped a sitter. Australia have done well, but they'll feel like they have given away 5-10 extra runs at this stage. OUT! TIMBER! A picture-perfect start for the Aussies. Pitched up, around middle and off, shaping back into the batter, Aamir Kaleem does not move his feet much and swings at it. The ball lands on the seam and nips back into the batter. Aamir gets an inside edge and the ball goes through the gap between the bat and the pad and rattles the leg stump. A golden duck for Aamir Kaleem.
Done with the pre-match formalities, and we are all set to get going. Mitchell Marsh leads his troops out to the middle. Xavier Bartlett will steam in first up. Aamir to take the first strike. A slip in place. Here we go!
Right then, it is time for the national anthems. Jatinder Singh and Mitchell Marsh lead their respective sides out, accompanied by the mascots. It will be Oman's national anthem first, followed by that of Australia.
PITCH REPORT - Former Pakistan batter, Bazid Khan, is pitchside. He notes that the temperature ranges from a high of 24 degrees to a low of 19, with humidity around 81 per cent. Mentions that there is a little breeze blowing across the ground, making it pleasant enough for the players despite the humidity. 2021 T20 World Cup winning captain for Australia, Aaron Finch, joins him, and he describes the surface as an absolute beauty for batting. He observes that there is a little bit of grass on it, but not live grass, which could mean the pitch might play slightly slower than usual. Finch adds that he does not expect too much spin to be on offer. He observes a couple of bare patches on the surface, but he does not believe they will have a major impact on the game. His advice to the top order batters is simple - if you get in, fill your boots. Bazid then asks Aaron whether the ball might stop a bit, given that the pitch has been under covers. Finch responds that he expects the ball to come onto the bat nicely, though it could be fractionally slower. He adds that it actually suits the top order batters, as it allows them to get under the ball.
It is an honour to play against Australia - The captain of Oman, Jatinder Singh, says that they were looking to bat first and believes that it is a wonderful track to bat on. Feels that this tournament has been a good learning curve for his team. Feels that they lack experience and exposure at this level, but these matches help them grow. He calls it an honour to play against Australia, admitting that they rarely get opportunities to face full member teams. He says the team is looking forward to this game. Informs that they have made four changes for this clash.
We respect the noise from back home - The skipper of Australia, Mitchell Marsh, chooses to bowl first on a fresh deck, expressing respect for the conditions. Reflecting on the team's disappointing exit from the 2026 T20 World Cup, he acknowledges that things did not go as planned but emphasises the group's determination to learn and finish the tournament with a win. Marsh also informs that they have made one change for this fixture, bringing in Matt Renshaw to replace Cooper Connolly.
Oman (Playing XI) - Jatinder Singh (C), Aamir Kaleem, Karan Sonavale (In for Ashish Odedara), Hammad Mirza, Wasim Ali (In for Nadeem Khan), Mohammad Nadeem, Vinayak Shukla (WK), Jiten Ramanandi, Jay Odedra (In for Sufyan Mehmood), Shakeel Ahmed and Shafiq Jan (In for Shah Faisal).
Australia (Playing XI) - Mitchell Marsh (C), Travis Head, Josh Inglis (WK), Tim David, Marcus Stoinis, Matt Renshaw (In for Cooper Connolly), Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell, Xavier Bartlett, Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa.
TOSS - Time for the coin to go up in Kandy. Mitchell Marsh and Jatinder Singh greet each other in the middle. The flip of the coin lands in favour of Marsh. Australia opt to BOWL first.
Playing for pride - Australia will come hard at Oman, desperate to salvage their reputation and ensure they don’t leave the tournament with a third consecutive loss. For Oman, it is about the dream of toppling a giant. Expect a high-intensity battle as one side looks to reclaim its honour and the other seeks to create a legacy on the world stage. Stay tuned for toss and team news.
Oman’s date with destiny - For Oman, this is more than just a final group game. It is a rare opportunity to test their mettle against the most decorated nation in ICC history. Despite losing all three of their matches so far, the Asian side has found silver linings in the form of the veteran Aamir Kaleem’s all-round contributions and Hammad Mirza's promising stroke play. For a developing cricketing nation, facing a wounded Australian side is a big occasion. They will aim to show some fight and hope to sign off from the global stage with a performance that echoes back home.
Middle order woes - The path to elimination was paved by a clinical Sri Lankan side and a spirited Zimbabwe. In their previous outing, despite a century stand between Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, the middle order crumbled against spin. A recurring nightmare for this lineup. The bowling, too, has lacked its signature sting, with even the reliable Adam Zampa struggling for rhythm. As they take the field this evening, the focus will be on whether the big guys can find their spark and if the inclusion of the veteran Steve Smith can restore some semblance of stability to a bruised batting card.
The fall of a giant - It has been a forgettable and uncharacteristic campaign for the Aussies. While injuries to pace stalwarts Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood left the attack thin on arsenal, the lack of fierce competitiveness has been the most jarring factor. Following a disappointing series defeat to Pakistan in the build-up to this tournament, this early exit from the World Cup marks a rare low point for Australian cricket. It raises urgent questions about their current form in the shortest format, and also about the team selection, as Steve Smith was in red-hot form in the recently concluded Big Bash League, and he came in as a replacement before the Sri Lanka game, but was not selected in the playing XI.
Australia and Oman’s final act - Hello and welcome to a fixture that carries the weight of pride and history, even as the Super 8 doors are shut. In the 40th and final group game of the T20 World Cup 2026, the cricketing world turns its eyes to the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. While the tournament standings may label this a dead rubber, the narrative surrounding these two sides ensures there is much to play for under the lights in Kandy.
... MATCHDAY ...
Group stage wraps up in Kandy - The group stage action at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup comes to a close with Australia taking on Oman at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium. Both teams won't be progressing to the Super 8 stage, with Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe sealing the two qualification spots from Group B. Early exit for the 2021 champions - It has been a campaign of major disappointment for Australia. A thumping win over Ireland set the tone perfectly, but slip-ups against Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka took matters out of their hands. And whatever hope remained was washed away, quite literally, when the game between Zimbabwe and Ireland was abandoned due to rain. That result sealed the Chevrons' Super 8 berth and knocked Australia out of the race. Their pace attack clearly lacked bite in the absence of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, with injuries keeping both spearheads out of the tournament. In the spin department, a lot rested on Adam Zampa, especially with all group games being played in spin-friendly Sri Lanka conditions. Zampa spun a web against Ireland, but went wicketless in the next two outings against Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. With the bat, Australia failed to chase down 170 versus Zimbabwe and, despite getting an ideal launchpad against Sri Lanka, couldn't press home the advantage. The injury to Mitchell Marsh in the lead-up to the tournament didn’t help either, but even then, this is a side with enough firepower in the batting tank, which makes the early exit all the more disappointing. Oman seek a positive finish - Oman haven’t quite managed to make the kind of impression some of the other Associate nations have in this tournament. With one final opportunity left, they will be eager to put in their best performance yet and bow out of the World Cup on a high. Games against Australia don't come around often, and for Jatinder Singh and his men, this will be an experience to cherish. The numbers with the bat paint a tough picture. Bowled out twice and losing 9 wickets in the other game underlines the struggles of their batting unit. They simply haven't been able to cope with higher-ranked bowling attacks, and it will not be any easier against a wounded Australian side. Jatinder Singh will be disappointed with his own returns at the top, and the likes of Vinayak Shukla, Hammad Mirza and Aamir Kaleem will also feel they haven't quite delivered with the bat. Conceding 235 against Ireland and 225 against Sri Lanka, Oman’s bowling attack has come under severe punishment in this tournament. There was one bright phase against Ireland when they had the Irish on the back foot at 64/4, but from that position, they dramatically lost the plot. Facing an Australian batting unit, Oman will need to click collectively as a bowling group. Form (Last 5 completed T20Is, most recent first) - Australia - LLWLL | Oman - LLLWW. What to expect? This will be just the second night game of the World Cup at this venue. The only previous night fixture here saw Australia take on Sri Lanka, where the Asian side, powered by a sublime century from Pathum Nissanka, romped home in 18 overs while chasing 182. Batting did become easier in the second innings in that game, and that could influence the decision at the toss. As for the head-to-head record, this will be only the second T20I meeting between these two sides. Their previous clash came during the last edition of the World Cup in Bridgetown, where Australia emerged on top. Will this contest follow a similar script? We shall find out.
