Haris Rauf
There are few fast bowlers who have travelled a more unusual path to international cricket than Haris Rauf. Known for his raw pace, aggressive approach and ability to bowl sharp yorkers at the death, the Pakistan quick has built his career around speed. But unlike many of his international teammates, Rauf did not come through Pakistan's traditional first-class system. His early cricketing education came on the country's tape-ball circuit, where he first began making a name for himself as a fast bowler.
Rauf spent his early years playing tape-ball cricket at various tournaments, earning money from the game while continuing his studies. He only made the transition to hard-ball cricket in his early 20s, but it did not take long for his pace to attract attention. A trial with Lahore Qalandars proved to be the turning point, with Rauf catching the eye of the franchise's coaches and earning a place in their development programme. Under Aaqib Javed, Rauf began turning his raw pace into a more complete bowling package. His rise continued into the Pakistan Super League before a move to the Melbourne Stars gave him his first major opportunity outside Pakistan. Rauf made the most of it, producing a series of impressive performances in the Big Bash League and establishing himself as a bowler capable of operating at serious pace.
That breakthrough opened the door to international cricket. Rauf made his T20I debut for Pakistan in 2020 and soon added ODI cricket to his repertoire. His ability to bowl quickly and attack the stumps made him a natural fit for Pakistan's white-ball plans, and he soon found himself operating in the most demanding phases of an innings. Rauf's biggest moments came on the global stage. He played an important role in Pakistan's run to the semi-finals of the 2021 T20 World Cup and was again part of their campaign at the 2022 edition, forming a strong pace partnership with Shaheen Shah Afridi. His ODI career developed alongside it, with Rauf becoming a regular in Pakistan's 50-over side and featuring at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Away from international cricket, Lahore Qalandars remained an important part of Rauf's story. He became one of the franchise's leading figures and helped them win back-to-back PSL titles. Rauf's international career has also been shaped by conflict and setback almost as much as by pace. He made himself unavailable for Pakistan's Test tour of Australia after citing workload and fitness concerns following a heavy run of white-ball cricket. The decision led to disciplinary action from the PCB before the matter was eventually resolved. The setbacks were not limited to injuries. Rauf also found himself at the centre of several off-field controversies, including incidents during the 2024 T20 World Cup and the 2025 Asia Cup. The latter resulted in a suspension that ruled him out of Pakistan's subsequent ODI series, adding another difficult chapter to his international career.
Rauf's standing in Pakistan's setup also became less certain in the period that followed. Despite continuing to perform in franchise cricket and remaining a prolific T20 bowler, he was left out of Pakistan's plans for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Around the same period, his long association with Lahore Qalandars came to an end, although he continued to attract opportunities in overseas leagues.
